After production of crystals, diffraction studies start with the determination of a harvest solution, and cryo-solution conditions. The determination of harvest, and cyro-solution conditions can be rapidly discovered in an in-house lab with use of the cryo-systems. While diffraction studies can be done with synchrotron facilities, the advantage of an in-house lab is the rapid result obtained. Some projects require use of synchrotron radiation to obtain diffraction, and sometimes the resolution of an in-house project can be extended by use of synchrotron radiation due to increased flux in a smaller diameter beam. If you would like to test your crystals in-house the following links below open calendars for the x-ray generators and detector systems that are available for use by Structural Biology Core members. These systems can be used by non-members on a cost basis.

For crystallographic projects that need higher intensity x-rays than a home source can provide, the WUSM SBC has access to a dedicated synchrotron beam line at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Advanced Light Source. This ALS beam line is open to all WUSM SBC Member Labs, or through collaboration with WUSM SBC Labs this resource can become available to WUSM Faculty who are not WUSM SBC Members.
